A Data Protection Officer (\u201cDPO\u201d) is an individual responsible for advising on the implications of data protection laws, developing a company\u2019s data and privacy protection policies<\/a> and ensuring compliance with the laws.<\/p>\n Although the title itself may vary, the appointment of a responsible person is essential. This role could be outsourced or assigned to an in-house employee. If there is no expertise within the business, responsibility for developing a sound privacy policy can be outsourced and, with appropriate training, internal employees can maintain and update the privacy policy as necessary.<\/p>\n With the regulatory climate tightening and legal risks involving personal customer information on the rise, SMEs can no longer afford to ignore privacy issues.<\/p>\n It is essential that businesses with an online presence, whether they offer products or services, have a DPO. For smaller companies, the DPO functions may be carried out in conjunction with other job duties.<\/p>\n The appointment of a DPO, while an essential business practice, may also soon become mandated by law.
